Global demand for polypropylene grows by an average of
6.9% a year.
According to a British market-research consulting agency Merchant Research
& Consulting Ltd., global demand for propylene (PP) will grow by 6.9% a year
until 2010. PP production has risen by 34% and PP consumption - by 35% over
the recent 5 years, Merchant Research & Consulting Ltd. experts say. Capacity
utilization rate remains at 92.2%. Production capacities will grow at an average
of 5.9%.
PP market may be driven by production technology development and the boost
of the demand for roofing materials.
The largest growth - 10% a year - will be demonstrated by India. North-East
Asia will feature an annual consumption growth of 6%. By 2009 North America
and Western Europe will exhibit consumption growth rates below world average
- 4.5% and 3.3% respectively.
In 2009, world PP consumption will reach 51.3m mt.
Merchant Research & Consulting Ltd. experts argue that nowadays polypropylene
holds the most stable position as compared to other polymers.
One of the reasons behind the dizzy rise in PP consumption is expansion
of its application areas paralleled by its substitution of other polymers (primarily,
polystyrene and PVC). Another reason which affects PP popularity is its price,
which often acts as a decisive factor when ecological friendliness of competing
polymers is comparable. As a result, polypropylene gets an upper hand in its
application in so-called engineering plastics heavily used in electronics, automotive
and other industries.
PP is heavily applied in the manufacture of polymer fiber and yarn due
to its low cost and ease of utilization. Currently, PP is also widely employed
in car industry.
