Developing countries account for 75% of chlorine demand
According to British consultancy firm Merchant Research & Consulting Ltd., developing countries will soon account for 75% of the demand for chlorine, which will increase market share of emerging economies.
However, high energy and production costs may impede construction of chlorine/alkali production capacities in certain developing world. Consequently, America will retain a leading position, followed, to a smaller degree, by Europe and Middle East, experts say.
Global demand for chlorine will grow by 2.2% a year to 55.5m mt in 2009.
Chlorine is an essential chemical produced in large volumes and used for synthesis of many organic and inorganic compounds, including plastics, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, bleachers, insecticides.
The demand for chlorine is susceptible to any market changes, mainly influenced by economic state, since chlorine end-products are usually used in the manufacture of long-lasting products, for example, in construction (PVC pipes, windows, doors; polyurethane insulation). Production of PVC and polyurethane accounts for 55% of the demand for chlorine. In 2005, demand and offer on the market of chlorine/alkali chemicals were almost equal, as opposed to 2004 which was characterized by oversupply. Over the recent years low profitability has hampered investments, thus leading to the shortage of production capacities.
